Margate
Skate Doc
No budget. All heart. A local skate community rising through the lens.
Community – A Margate Skate Story is a self-funded short documentary that captures the grit, passion, and grassroots activism of Margate’s skateboarders as they campaign for a permanent skatepark. Shot with no budget and no production crew, the film was co-shot by myself and Hazeleigh Prebble, capturing authentic, on-the-ground perspectives from skaters, local traders, and youth advocates.
I directed, co-filmed, planned logistics, conducted the interviews, handled lighting setups, and fully edited the film in post-production — building the story frame by frame with a DIY ethos that reflects the community it documents. The result is a raw yet crafted portrait of urban culture and collective resilience.
Premiered locally and shared online, the film went on to win Best British Director – Short Documentary at the London Director Awards. Today, it stands as both a celebration of Margate skate culture and a testament to what passion projects can achieve — even without funding.
