BLOOD
& BUGS
Turning a wartime shelter into a living science lab — where bugs, blood, and history meet.
In 2014, I was commissioned by The Royal College of Pathologists to help bring to life Blood & Bugs — an immersive public engagement project marking the centenary of World War I. I designed the interior of a full-scale replica WW1 Nissen hut and created the visual branding for the experience, transforming it into a compelling hands-on learning environment. The space used a mix of historical references, museum styling, and bold graphics to teach visitors about the breakthroughs in blood transfusion, hygiene, antibiotics, and infection control that were born out of wartime necessity — and still save lives today. The installation toured nationally as part of the BBC’s WW1 at Home roadshow, reaching over 30,000 people and leaving a lasting impression of how pathology shaped both medical history and our future.
